About Taupo Fishing
Rainbow and brown trout of Lake Taupo and its rivers account for 30-40% of trout caught in New Zealand annually.
Trout in Lake Taupo are completely wild stock. Most spawning trout go up river over the winter months, but many stay in the lake. It's an open season out on Lake Taupo with fishing 12 months of the year. We rarely say guaranteed, but it would be unusual to return home empty handed.
With the catches reported from fishing guides on the lake and our own charter trips. We are in for a good season. I often get asked. What size fish are we likely to catch?. Well, Taupo trout have to be 40cm. That's about 17 inches. Anything smaller is released to live another day. Trout grow incredibly fast here in Taupo. The fish we release today will be a good keeper in a couple of month's time.
What we have is a lake the size of Singapore and the largest fresh water lake in Australasia. While we have our favorite fishing spots, with a little expertise, we can catch magnificent trout just about any where on Lake Taupo. 4lb, 5lb to 7lb is an expected weight. We look forward to getting you out there.
